Jakub V

Jakub V Stewart (ur. 10 kwietnia 1512 w Linlithgow Palace, zm. 14 grudnia 1542 w Falkland Palace) – król Szkocji w latach 1513–1542, jedyny spośród synów króla Jakuba IV Stewarta i Małgorzaty Tudor, najstarszej córki króla Anglii Henryka VII, który przeżył dzieciństwo. Jakub objął tron mając niewiele ponad rok, po śmierci ojca w bitwie pod Flodden. Do 1528 r. realną władzę w Szkocji sprawowali regenci.

Ostatecznie w 1524 r. Albany odpłynął do Francji i regentką ponownie została Małgorzata. W 1527 r. rozwiodła się z Angusem, co spowodowało zerwanie z jego krewniakami – klanem Douglasów, którzy porwali Jakuba i umieścili go w Falkland Palace, uzyskując tym samym rzeczywistą władzę w kraju.

Euphemia Elphinstone

Euphemia Elphinstone (also written Euphame or Eupheme; born 11 May 1509) was a mistress of James V of Scotland and the mother of his son Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney, born in 1532, as well as another child who died in childhood. One of her sons with her husband John Bruce was Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie (1547–1617), the builder of Muness Castle.

She was the second daughter of Alexander Elphinstone, 1st Lord Elphinstone and Elizabeth Barlow or Barlay (c. 1476 – 10 September 1518), an English woman of the household of Margaret Tudor.

The family hailed from Elphinstone near Stirling. Her brother Alexander, Lord Elphinstone, died at Edinburgh following the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh.

Euphemia married John Bruce of Cultmalindie (c. 1507 – March 1547), and had five children: Laurence Bruce, Robert Bruce (born c. 1536), Henry Bruce (born c. 1538), James Bruce (born c. 1540) and Euphamie Bruce (born c. 1542). There is no firm evidence for any death date.

Her children and descendants were significant in the history of the Shetland Islands and Orkney Islands. Laurence Bruce and Robert Stewart and their families were to become closely entwined in the Shetland Islands, of which Laurence Bruce was appointed Sheriff by his half-brother.

According to legend, many people in the Shetland Islands are descended from her; in particular, those named Bruce are supposed to be descended from her children by John Bruce.

Elizabeth Bethune

Elizabeth Bethune, or Beaton (died after 1581), was one of the mistresses of King James V of Scotland. Their daughter, Lady Jean Stewart, married Archibald Campbell, 5th Earl of Argyll.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir David Beaton of Creich, a nephew of James Beaton, Archbishop of St Andrews, and Keeper of Falkland Palace.

As an infant, Elizabeth's daughter Jean Stewart was brought up in the household of Mary of Guise (the Queen of Scotland as wife of King James V), and then briefly in the nursery of her legitimate half-brother, Prince James, the Duke of Rothesay, the infant son of King James V.

Subsequently, Elizabeth was married to John Stewart, 4th Lord Innermeath, by whom she had two sons, James Stewart, 5th Lord Innermeath and the poet John Stewart of Baldynneis. Elizabeth and her husband John were granted lands in the parish of Inverkeilor in May 1544.

In 1572 she married secondly James Gray, son of Patrick Gray, 4th Lord Gray. In 1578 Gray fathered a child by her niece, Isobel Beaton. The subsequent quarrel led to sieges of Redcastle in Angus, and several court cases. She got her divorce in 1581.
