Jest zaliczany do trzeciej generacji Szkoły Annales. Zajmował się problematyką związaną z tożsamością i pamięcią. Członek Akademii Francuskiej (od 2001). Prywatnie związany był z Anne Sinclair, byłą żoną Dominique'a Straussa-Kahna.
